Road trip from Taroudant: the best roads into the Anti-Atlas

Taroudant makes a good base for exploring the Anti-Atlas, the mountain range that separates the Souss valley from the Sahara. The roads are winding but generally in good condition, and the landscape shifts quickly — farmland and olive groves give way to rocky terrain.

Heading toward Tafraoute, the road crosses the Ameln valley, known for its pisé villages built into the mountainside and for almond blossoms in February. Tafraoute itself is known for its pink rock formations and nearby rock carvings.

Further west, Tiznit is known for its silver jewelry craftsmanship and its own set of ramparts. A Taroudant–Tiznit–Tafraoute loop works well over two to three days with short daily stretches.

To the southwest, the road connects Taroudant to the Souss plain and its argan-oil cooperatives — a good chance to see the traditional pressing process and buy directly from the source.
